“If you’re not claiming through the Diesel Rebate Scheme, you’re leaving money behind. Simple as that.” By Brian Coogan

The latest Government fuel support agreement has delivered some breathing space for Irish haulage operators, but the structure of that support remains widely misunderstood across the industry. There is no standalone grant or direct payment system. Instead, the backbone of financial recovery remains the Diesel Rebate Scheme (DRS), and operators must actively engage with it to benefit. Diesel Rebate Scheme (DRS)

The DRS allows operators to reclaim a portion of excise duty paid on diesel. It is the single most important mechanism for recovering rising fuel costs. Eligibility:
– Licensed haulage operator
– Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes
– Valid tax clearance
– Diesel purchased in Ireland for business use

Claim Process:
– Register via ROS (Revenue Online Service)
– Submit claims quarterly
– Maintain full fuel and mileage records

Rebate Value:
– Approx. 7.5c per litre currently
– Expected increases under new Government measures
– Potential backdating to early 2026

Automatic Supports
Operators are also benefiting from excise reductions at the pump — this is immediate and requires no application.

Operational Strategy
To maximise returns:
– Register immediately if not already in DRS
– Ensure fuel traceability (fuel cards strongly recommended)
– Submit claims without delay

Industry Insight
The most profitable operators are not just running efficient fleets — they are disciplined in administration.
In the current climate, paperwork equals profit.

Conclusion
This is a system that rewards action. Engage with it properly, and it becomes a meaningful support. Ignore it, and the opportunity is gone.
