A pioneering mobile app, ESB Networks AR: The Story of Electricity, has been launched to educate and engage users through augmented reality (AR), bringing Ireland’s electricity infrastructure and history vividly to life.
Developed by the Walton Institute at South East Technological University in collaboration with ESB Networks, the app offers an immersive, multimedia experience that traces electricity’s journey from generation to delivery.
Users can explore ESB Networks’ Training Centre in Portlaoise through a guided AR tour featuring a virtual host created using advanced 3D scanning and animation.
Visitors can view real-world equipment on-site, while remote users can explore Ireland’s electricity story from anywhere. The app includes unique features such as 360° video footage from a technician’s climb up a transmission tower — offering a thrilling glimpse into the world of network technicians.
Stephen Barnes, Senior Project Manager at Walton Institute, said the app combines technology, storytelling, and education to inspire the next generation of electrical professionals. David Harrington of ESB Networks added that it reflects their commitment to innovation and public engagement.
The app is also designed for use in schools and training centres and was co-funded by the Irish Government and the EU under the ERDF Regional Programme 2021–27.
