Belfast-based Workflow Hub has recently installed several Brigade Electronics safety systems in Cemcor’s new Cat shovels which are in operation at its Cookstown quarry in Co Tyrone. We went to have a look at these systems up close.

Protecting life and limb should be everyone’s first priority especially in a risky environment like a quarry. Belfast-based Workflow Hub recently installed several Brigade Electronics safety systems in new Cat wheel loaders which are in operation at Cemcor’s Cookstown quarry in Co Tyrone.

Lisburn-based Prowire also recently installed Brigade safety systems on all of Cemcor’s road trucks. Both Prowire and Workflow Hub are trained and approved Brigade installers.

Plant vehicles

The Cemcor plant including Cat 988XE wheeled loaders and Cat 775 dumpers are equipped with the Backeye®360 High Definition system, which utilises four strategically-placed cameras to deliver a seamless 360-degree real-time image. These cameras are installed at the front, rear, nearside and offside of the veicles for all round visibility.

The integrated camera feeds are displayed on a 7-inch high-definition monitor mounted in the vehicle’s cab. This system significantly enhances low-speed manoeuvrability by providing the operator with a single surround-view image, reducing the need to switch focus between multiple mirrors or monitors.

Key features of the Backeye®360 system include all-round visibility: A single, combined image reduces driver workload and aids in hazard identification; and Improved safety, minimising the driver’s ‘blind time’ by reducing the need to alternate between mirrors, windows, and the windscreen.

This system is particularly effective in preventing accidents in confined or high-risk work zones by improving hazard detection and reaction times.

Road trucks

Cemcor’s road trucks are fitted with a five-camera system and a digital mobile recording device (MDR) for enhanced operational safety and accountability.

The cameras are positioned to provide comprehensive coverage of critical areas which are: nearside (left), offside (right), the front, the rear and the load area.

The camera feeds are displayed on the integrated, factory-fitted monitor within the cab, allowing the driver to maintain complete situational awareness. Simultaneously, all views are recorded by Brigade’s MDR system, ensuring high-quality footage for operational review, driver training, and insurance claims.

The load camera, in particular, is vital for monitoring transported materials such as stones and cement as well as site workers within proximity of the truck. It is also important for safety compliance (eg, ensuring side rails are properly secured). This setup ensures compliance with safety protocols and minimises risks to both personnel and property during truck operations.

To support all the Cemcor safety systems, both Prowire and Workflow Hub offer expert installation and system integration and professional guidance on system functionality.

The safe Brigade

The installation of these safety devices aligns with Cemcor-owner LCC’s broader safety strategy, which emphasises the need for high-quality, dependable solutions. The company says it selected Brigade systems because of its superior quality camera and recording technology as well as its proven reliability in demanding industrial environments.

Prowire and Workflow Hub were chosen for their unmatched service and support capabilities, ensuring seamless installation and ongoing assistance whenever required.

Market-leading vehicle safety systems supplier Brigade is based in Kent in the UK. The company has been supplying vehicle safety camera systems and detection systems to a wide range of plant since 1976 when it introduced the very first reversing alarm to Europe.

Since then it has expanded into many new markets, fitting their products into everything from fork trucks, buses and trucks to large quarry plant like wheeled loaders and dumpers.
Chris Ewing, Brigade technical key account manager for Ireland comments,”We are delighted to be working with both Prowire and Workflow Hub to supply our product to the new Cemcor plant purchases. Brigade safety systems are the leading products in Europe in this category.”
