Leading civil engineering and infrastructure contractor Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has achieved a verified 3.72% fuel saving following an extensive eight-month trial of the FuelActive clean fuel delivery system, with the results now driving a fleet-wide rollout.
The initial controlled trial ran from March to October 2025 and was designed to deliver a true like-for-like comparison under real working conditions. Twelve articulated dump trucks were deployed on the same site, undertaking identical duty cycles, utilisation rates and payloads. Six Volvo A40G ADTs were fitted with FuelActive, while six operated without the system as a control group.
Using OEM telematics data, the company analysed 27,000 individual data points over the eight-month period. The findings showed that machines equipped with FuelActive consumed 3.72% less fuel than their counterparts. That equates to an annual saving per machine of 1,295 litres of fuel and £1,450 in cost reduction, alongside a projected CO₂ reduction of 3,400kg per machine, per year.
Reliability That Supports Uptime
While the fuel and emissions savings are significant, operational reliability proved equally compelling. Throughout the entire trial period, the FuelActive-equipped machines recorded zero fuel-related breakdowns.
FuelActive replaces the conventional bottom-of-tank fuel pick-up with a floating pick-up that draws cleaner fuel from just below the surface of the fuel level, helping prevent contaminants such as water and sediment from reaching modern high-pressure fuel injection systems. For Jones Bros, this translated into greater operational consistency and reduced risk of unexpected downtime on site.
Huw Jones, Chairman of Jones Bros, said:
“With FuelActive now integrated into our fleet, we’ve improved operational reliability, reducing fuel-related downtime and ensuring our equipment delivers consistent performance on site.
It marks a positive move towards stronger uptime, greater fuel efficiency and setting higher benchmarks for sustainability across the construction sector.”
Rolling Out Across the Fleet
Following the success of the trial, FuelActive is now being fitted across the wider Jones Bros fleet of construction and quarrying equipment.
The decision reflects the company’s commitment to practical, data-led solutions that deliver measurable commercial returns while supporting lower emissions and stronger sustainability performance across heavy construction operations.
