Tonight at the February Council Meeting, the Elected Members of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council voted to approve the new Climate Action Plan for 2024-2029.
The new Climate Action Plan 2024-2029 sets out to achieve, by no later than the end of 2050, the transition to a climate resilient, biodiversity rich, environmentally sustainable and climate neutral County. Aligned to the Government’s National Climate Objective (as set out in the national Climate Action Plan 2024), the new Plan outlines mitigation and adaptation climate action measures across the following six thematic areas – Energy & Buildings, Transport, Flood Resilience, Nature Based Solutions, Circular Economy & Resource Management and Citizen Engagement.
An Cathaoirleach, Councillor Denis O’Callaghan commented:
Climate action is one of my priorities, so I am delighted that we have come together and approved the Climate Action Plan 2024-2029. This new Plan sets out the actions that DLR in collaboration with many stakeholders in our County, will take over a 5-year period to protect residents, workers, and visitors from the impacts of climate change such as flooding, sea level rise, and extreme weather events.
Chief Executive Frank Curran added:
I am very pleased that our Climate Action Plan 2024-2029 has been approved. We have already completed several projects which will help reduce the effects of climate change into the future and we have many more in progress across the County which will be of benefit to all in our collective efforts to both adapt to and mitigate climate related impacts. Over the lifetime of this new Climate Action Plan, our staff will work with the partners identified, and any other new ones that may emerge, to deliver the actions listed so that the vision and mission of the plan can be realised.
