New RSA Regulations Pose Challenges for Construction Firms, IPCA to Take Action.

In a recent development shaking the construction industry, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has introduced new rules concerning the use of tractors in construction-related activities. These regulations mandate the use of road tires, white diesel, and require operators to obtain an artic license, posing significant difficulties for construction firms already struggling to meet housing and infrastructure objectives.

Brian Coogan, CEO of the Irish Plant Contractors Association (IPCA), expressed concern over the RSA’s decision to implement these rules without consulting trade bodies like the IPCA. Coogan emphasised that this lack of engagement reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the challenges faced by the Irish construction industry.

“The introduction of these new rules by the RSA without any consultation with trade bodies such as the IPCA shows a lack of understanding of the challenges the Irish construction industry faces,” Coogan stated.

The ramifications of these regulations are expected to extend beyond mere compliance issues. Coogan warned that the additional costs imposed by the new rules could potentially result in job losses within the construction sector, further exacerbating the industry’s struggles.

Coogan stressed the importance of collaboration and consultation between regulatory authorities and industry stakeholders to ensure that policies are rooted in the realities faced by construction firms. In response to these challenges, the IPCA is poised to engage with the RSA and the Minister for Transport to address concerns and work towards solutions that prioritise both safety and the sustainability of the construction sector.

As discussions progress, Coogan and the IPCA remain committed to advocating for policies that support the industry’s growth while safeguarding its workforce and economic contributions. Stay tuned to Machinery Movers Magazine for further updates on this evolving.
